Hojicha Powder is, in a way, Matcha’s little brother — but the two shouldn’t be confused. They are not made from the same type of tea: one is roasted green tea with a warm hazelnut-brown hue, while the other is a vibrant green tea with bold vegetal notes. The word Hojicha, meaning “roasted tea,” has its roots in Japanese tradition. Inspired by the growing popularity of Hojicha lattes from Japan, we had the idea to create our own fine powdered Hojicha, ground in-house. We proudly embrace this artisanal grind. While it may contain slightly larger particles than stone-milled tea, we find that this format enhances the roasted flavor that makes Hojicha so distinctive.
We’ve created this more full-bodied version specifically for use in lattes and do not recommend preparing it with water alone. Matcha lovers will appreciate this new type of ground tea, perfect for enjoying any time of day. Its low caffeine content and rich roasted hazelnut taste make it especially appealing.
Notes and tips
It’s normal to see some tea sediment in your cup. The tea leaves are ground into fine particles but are not water-soluble and will settle at the bottom. To reduce the amount of sediment, strain the beverage through a fine mesh strainer.
Hot Hojicha Latte Recipe
This easy method requires no chasen (bamboo matcha whisk).
Pour 200 ml of water and 150 ml of milk into a saucepan. Add 1 teaspoon of powdered Hojicha. Sweeten to taste. Bring to a boil, whisk thoroughly, then cover and simmer over low heat for 2 to 3 minutes. Strain through a fine mesh strainer before serving in a teapot, a bowl, or your favorite cup.

Matcha can be classified in different grades and specified according to aroma, texture and even where it is originated. Each type of matcha can be appreciated in its own way. The powdered green tea has been used in the Japanese tea ceremony (Cha-no-yu) for centuries. Matcha is made using pure luxury grade Japanese green tea Tencha leaves, a Japanese tea variety that is shaded beneath special shade covers for 3 weeks before plucking. The shading forces the plants to produce a higher than normal chlorophyll content which gives the leaves a rich green color and high level of antioxidants.
Matcha is prepared in a bowl (chawan) and mixed with boiling water with a bamboo whisk (chasen). This matcha is tasty with frank herbaceous aromas and a slight bitterness.

How to create a tea blend reminiscent of freshly baked apple pie and pumpkins? Our challenge was to omit artificial flavours and truly focus on natural ingredients for our exclusive mix. Firstly, we created a list of spices inspired by traditional pumpkin pie recipes. The now revealed secret to our Autumn Tea is a great deal of spices: : nutmeg, allspice, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom and cloves. Then, we added a subtle touch of orange peels and a sweet hint of vanilla. The core of our blend is Hojicha, a Japanese green tea well known for its roasted leaves. We chose it for its soft notes of hazelnut and chestnut as well as its low caffeine level. Cozy up and appreciate the long aftertaste of autumn spices!

Exquisite oolong from Lai Chau province, northwest of Vietnam. Its floral notes are reminiscent of lily of the valley and it seduces you at the very first moments with a soft and buttery sensation. This slightly oxidized tea is what we call a Jin Xuan (milky oolong), a type of oolong developed within Taiwanese traditions. This tea is cultivated in high altitude, then undergoes a moderate oxidation before being carefully rolled. A process that naturally gives the tea leaf creamy and milky flavor.

Pu Erh tea can be quite disconcerting at first and lends itself to patient discovery. Aged for 1 year, this tea has a characteristic earthy taste and is bitter-free. With its low level of caffeine and tannins, Pu Erh tea is recommended for people with sensitive stomach.
To make Pu Erh Shou tea, fresh leaves are manipulated similarly to preparing black tea by withering, drying and rolling. The precious leaves are then spread for a few days in a room kept at high temperature and humidity, thus accelerating the post-fermentation process. .

Superb red tea reminiscent of wood bark with an earthy profile. The finish is mild and slightly sweet with a peppery finish. This Pu Erh SHOU from 2016 comes in a flat round shape. The tea leaves are pressed together (in a miniature version of the traditionnal large bing cha disc form) during the post-fermentation process wich lasts several years. The idea of an aged tea can sometimes surprise. This portioned version contains just what it takes to serve 1 liter of tea at a time. Therefore, it is perfect to try it and discover the red tea category.
To prepare the tea: remove the paper envelope, place the intact mini bing cha in the infuser of your teapot and pour a little bit of hot water (95 degrees Celsius) to rinse the leaves. After 15 to 20 seconds, discard the water. Fill the teapot with one litre of hot water (95 degrees Celsius), then let steep for 5 to 7 minutes. Meanwhile, the leaves will gradually separate and release their aromas. Free of bitterness, low in caffeine and tannin, red tea is excellent after meals.
The method to create Pu Erh SHOU teas: fresh leaves are manipulated similarly to preparing black tea by withering, drying and rolling. The precious leaves are then kept and spread under large canvases in a room at high temperature and humidity, thus accelerating the post-fermentation process.
The total weight is approximatly 32g for 4 miniature discs (mini bing cha). The weight can slightly vary.

In order to achieve this delicately flavoured Pu Erh, the tea leaves are placed in the peel of a mandarin before the fermentation is complete. As the tea ages, it absorbs the characteristic citrus aroma. This allows the taste to be much less earthy than the traditional Pu Erh, and instead the flavour is woodsy with hints of sweet orange. It does however retain its complete lack of bitterness and amazing digestive properties. This unique Pu Erh is definitely worth a try!
The same tea leaves can be infused 2 to 3 times according to the suggested method of preparation.
Each mandarin content approximately 18 to 35 g.

To mark our 20th anniversary, we present to you an exclusive series of elegant cups handcrafted by Carmen Abdallah. It is truly an honor to offer you special edition designs by a ceramist with whom we've been collaborating since the inception of Cha Noir. We asked Carmen to number each of her small creations. Hence, like pieces of art, each handcrafted cup has a number from 1to 50.
The artist developed a new glaze specifically for this series of 50 exclusive cups. She used among other things, ash from the woods of the Laurentides (the region where she has been working for years) and feldspath. When fired at a high temperature, the glaze vitrifies to create unique hues and textures on the surface. She worked with a light clay from Ontario which was fired in an electric kiln, a judicious choice that allowed her to present pieces featuring shades of orange, ochre, and blue, on a pale background, for a result that stands apart from the rest of her work.
It's worth noting that Carmen Abdallah lost her studio in a fire in March 2023. This was a challenging period for her. She lost her equipment, pieces, clay, kilns, and all the fruits of her labor from recent years. Her studio has been temporarily relocated, and she now produces only limited special editions in small quantities.
Please note that ceramists' pieces are unique since they are handcrafted. It's precisely this uniqueness that we seek when buying from a ceramist. Every piece is different. The shades, shapes, dimensions and textures may vary slightly from one piece to another, even if they were created as part of a series. The photo and cup dimensions provided are indicative. Due to screen differences, colors, shades, and saturation might vary slightly.
Cups are available while supplies last. Exceptionally, a shipping fee of $10 (+ taxes), which covers a portion of the shipping costs, will be automatically added to any order containing this exclusive product even if the order totals $65 or more. You can choose in-store pickup; in this case you can collect your package in-store, and these fees will not be charged.
Safe for food consumption. Non-toxic and free from heavy metals.
